Core Components

Deadbolt vs. Latch

  • Deadbolt: The solid metal bolt that extends into the door frame. It is not spring-loaded and requires a key or thumbturn to retract. This provides physical security.
  • Latch (Spring Latch): The beveled bolt on a door handle that retracts when you turn the knob. It is for convenience, not high security.

Backset

The distance from the edge of the door to the center of the bore hole.

  • Standard: 2-3/8" (60mm) is common for residential.
  • Commercial: 2-3/4" (70mm) is common for wider doors.
  • Tip: Most modern smart locks have an adjustable latch that fits both.

Strike Plate

The metal plate installed on the door frame.

  • security Strike: Uses 3-inch screws to anchor into the wall stud, not just the trim. Crucial for kick-in resistance.
